Pop Up Melting Snowman Craft for Kids

Learn how to make a pop up melted snowman craft. This is a fun winter craft for kids for days when you are stuck inside.

Snowman crafts are the perfect winter craft to do when you are stuck inside with the kids. This particular snowman craft is awesome because it involves materials you probably already have and creating the “pop up” part of the snowman creates much fun even for kids of all ages. Let’s not forget about the fact that using scissors and paper is great for fine motor skills. Let me show you!

If you’ve been around here a while you know that I’m no stranger to creating snowman crafts and cute food ideas involving snowman. I recently created some yummy melting snowman cookies, an easy toilet paper roll snowman, I shared how to make a snowman in Minecraft, and then I rounded up a handful of fun snowmen crafts that you can do all year. Also check out this neat Pinecone Snowman Craft and this cute Snowman kindness craft. Whew, we certainly don’t have a shortage for snowman ideas around here!

Materials needed:

If you don’t have some of these materials, you can substitute puffy paint for the buttons and googly eyes. You can also paint white paper in place of colored construction paper or a white pom pom or even white felt. For older kids, you can use hot glue in place of a glue stick.

Side note; I’ve seen this craft done with shaving cream. Rather than cutting out construction paper you would create a solution (with shaving cream) that would essentially create a 3D image of a snowman on paper. Once it dried you would decorate it. Hmmm, this might be a future craft idea.

Even though the shaving cream sounds like a fun, it’s a very messy way to create a simple winter craft. That being said, this snowman craft is nice and clean and a great way to get crafting without all the mess.

How to create a pop up melted snowman craft for kids

First step, decide what color construction paper you will use for the background. We chose blue. You can make the background as big or as small as you want. Cut the paper according to how big you want it.

Next cut two irregular circles (otherwise known as “blobs”) out of the white construction paper making sure one is bigger than the other. These will be for the snowman parts. You don’t even need craft templates because you want all the shapes to be different. Each snowman is unique and there isn’t a “perfect way” to create one.

Then cut two to three skinny strips out of another color of construction paper.

Fold them in a zig zag pattern like pictured below and glue it to both of the white circles.

Next glue the two zig zag cut outs to the bottom of larger white circle and glue that to the colored construction paper. This is the mechanism that will make this adorable melted snowman craft POP!

This is what it will look like from the top once you’ve glued the snowman together.

Next use the black construction paper to cut out a top hat for the snowman. Glue it to the top of the white circle.

Use the orange construction paper to cut and glue a nose for your snowman. It will look like a carrot nose. You can also create an orange triangle nose with a pen or acrylic paint.

Glue some googly eyes and a few buttons and the melting snowman is almost done! Remember, you can always use a paint brush with paint, puffy paint or any other material to make the eyes and shirt. Almost ready for the final product!

Isn’t he cute? The best thing about this craft is the 3D part in my opinion.

The last thing we did was cut out two brown arms for the snowman. You can also use a brown pipe cleaner for the arms if you don’t want to use paper. Now our melted snowman is complete!

How easy was that! What a creative way to make a snowman melt, right?
