What is Ramadan?
In 610, the angel Gabriel appeared to Prophet Muhammed and gave him the first revelation of the holy Quran, the Islamic holy book. This is believed to have happened during Ramadan.
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims around the world. During Ramadan, Muslims observe fasting (sawm) from dawn until sunset. Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and worship. Muslims are encouraged to read the Quran, engage in prayer (salat), and perform acts of charity (zakat and sadaqah). The month culminates in the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festival that marks the last day of Ramadan.
The exact dates of Ramadan vary each year, as the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar cycle, which is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar.
If you want to wish someone a good start of Ramadan, it is normal to say “Ramadan Mubarak“, which means “Blessed Ramadan.”
