Coffee filter flowers are one of the easiest ways to create beautiful paper flowers that look surprisingly similar to real flowers. These delicate, three-dimensional flowers make perfect decorations for a Mother’s Day gift, bridal shower centerpiece, or simply to brighten up your dining table. The best part is that you can customize them in different colors.
To begin this flower craft, gather your supplies: coffee filters, washable markers (food coloring works too), a spray bottle (or eye dropper), pipe cleaners, hot glue (optional) or stapler, paper towels, and a sheet of wax paper or baking sheet to protect your work surface.
How to make easy coffee filter flowers
Start by coloring the coffee filters using washable markers for defined patterns or food colouring for a more watercolor effect. When picking colors, make sure to use colors that blend well together and don’t create browns or grays. For example, red, yellow and blue mixed make brown. Stick to blending like colors like different shades of blue and different shades of red and purple.
When coloring the coffee filters, I chose to use different patterns so each “flower” looks different.
Once colored, lightly mist the filters with water from a spray bottle, causing the marker ink to blend and create stunning new colors and patterns as the colors bleed together.
After I sprayed them down (you don’t have to drench them), I let them sit a few minutes. Then I took a dry paper towel and dabbed them lightly. The key is lightly. You don’t have to do this, but I find they dry faster and they are less prone to tearing without all the excess water.
Once I dabbed the extra water out, I moved them slowly and carefully to a set of clean wax paper.
This is when I let them sit and dry for a few hours.
After the coffee filters dried, fold them in half, then in quarters, and continue until you have a folded coffee filter that resembles a triangle.
Cut the pointed edge into a rounded shape to create flower petals when unfolded.
Once the petals were done, I opened each up and stapled one pipe cleaner to it. Then I wrapped the pipe cleaner around the bottom of the petal so you wouldn’t see the metal staple.
Layer several filters together, offsetting them slightly, and add an additional petal layer for fullness if desired.
