Paper plate flowers are a fun way for young children to create something crafty for Mother’s Day, spring or any time of the year . All this craft needs is a few standard paper plates, scissors, glue and coloring materials!

To make the flower petals, children can cut small slits around the edge of the paper plate, which they can then fold or curl to create a three-dimensional effect. This simple technique not only adds depth to the flowers but also encourages the development of fine motor skills as they manipulate the paper. Once the paper plates are cut and pasted together, have your kids use liquid watercolors, markers, crayons or anything they want to decorate them with. The vibrant colors will bring the flowers to life, making them perfect for decorations or gifting.

Once the petals are ready, children can create the center of the flower using construction paper or additional cut outs from the paper plates.  Whether they are making a bouquet for Mom or a decorative piece for their room, paper plate flowers are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Let me show you step by step how to create these cute paper plate flowers.

As you can see, you start by folding the paper plate in halves. Once you’ve folded it a third time, you cut a round edge on the top. This creates a scalloped edge. You can cut as many different “flowers” as you want. Make sure to vary the sizes of the flowers you cut, so you can place them on top of each other to create dimension.

You can see I used the left over cut outs from the paper plates to make the center part of the flower. I just rolled it out and hot glued it together so it wouldn’t unravel. Make sure to cut slits in it so it looks realistic.

After I made all the cuts, it was time to paint!

You can see where I cut four different sized flowers out of paper plates and I’m preparing to paint them. I used regular old acrylic paint.

They don’t have to be perfect to be pretty!

Once they are dry, place them on top of each other and attach them with glue (hot glue, elmers glue, etc.).

To make it more realistic, make sure to “pinch” the petals so they aren’t fully flat.
