Teaching Children to Sew

Wednesday, September 10, 2008 17:02

Sewing is a very practical skill to teach children. After all, our wardrobes are made of stitched materials, backpacks are stitched, bedspreads, etc.

It’s really not that difficult to teach children to sew. To start, you should show them a small type of activity like sewing a pillowcase.

There are two ways of sewing the fabric. Sewing by hand and sewing by machine. It is suggested that you start them off sewing by hand so they gain a bit if respect for a needle. Machines might be quicker, but they are also more dangerous and shouldn’t be used until the child is a bit more experienced.

First you try to perform sewing sample before your child and then give him or her chance to sew it without your support. Kids learn quickly, so before you know it, your child will be sewing circles around you! If they take an interest in the craft, it might be a good idea to provide them some basic books about sewing to teach them some new techniques.

Learning to sew is a journey just like anything else. Kids may feel frustration in the start but when they gain some practice, they become confident. Their practice skills help them to be more creative in their work and make them feel proud of making different items with their own two hands.
